31 year-old German former footballer who played as a midfielder, Thomas Hitzlsperger has come out as gay. But he waited to retire from football before revealing his sexual preference.
Hitzlsperger, who spent the early part of his career playing for Aston Villa in England, before returning to Germany to play for Stuttgart, and retired in September 2013 due to a knee injury yesterday told a German newspaper.
"I'm coming out about my homosexuality because I want to move the discussion about homosexuality among professional sportspeople forwards. In England, Italy & Germany being a homosexual is no big thing, at least not in the dressing room. The awareness of being gay was a long anddifficult process. Only in recent years has it dawned on me that I would prefer to live with another man. I've never been ashamed of my sexuality"
In 1990, John Fashanu's brother and former England Under-21 international, Justin Fashanu was the first professional footballer in Britain to reveal he was gay. Later took his own life eight years later, aged 37.
In February 2013, former United States and Leeds United winger Robbie Rogers said he was gay while Swedish footballer Anton Hysen, son of former Liverpool player Glenn Hysen, announced his homosexuality in an interview with a Swedish football magazine in 2011.
